Developer Jobs Are Quietly Moving From Software Companies to Manufacturers

The layoff headlines all come from the same place. Oracle, Meta, Microsoft, Salesforce. Over 175,000 tech workers have been cut so far in 2026, and more than half of those layoff announcements explicitly name AI as a driving factor. If you only read those headlines, you would conclude that software development as a career is contracting.

Look at where the hiring is actually happening, though, and a different picture emerges. Tech job postings in manufacturing were up 27 percent this year. Robert Half’s industry data shows technology hiring in manufacturing and distribution approaching 100,000 roles, roughly on par with financial services. The jobs are not disappearing. They are changing address.

Why software companies are cutting while factories are hiring

Pure software companies are in an odd position right now. AI coding tools have genuinely raised individual developer output, but nobody knows by how much or for how long. Boards do not like uncertainty, and cutting headcount is a quarterly story they understand. So software firms are running lean, freezing junior hiring, and waiting to see where AI productivity actually lands.

Manufacturers face the opposite pressure. They are years behind on digitisation and cannot wait. Smart factory programmes, IIoT sensor networks, predictive maintenance, MES and ERP integration, OT cybersecurity, data pipelines feeding AI models: all of it needs software people, and most of it needs them on-site or close to the business. Reshoring adds fuel. New plants are being announced with entire production lines that do not yet have a single engineer assigned.

Here is the part that matters for anyone weighing a move: manufacturers hiring for cloud, AI, data engineering, and cybersecurity roles increasingly do not require prior factory experience. They need people who can apply standard IT skills to operational environments. The barrier to entry is lower than it looks from the outside.

Why this has at least five years of runway

Three reasons this is not a blip.

First, the backlog is structural. Surveys of manufacturers consistently show around three quarters reporting a critical shortage of skilled digital workers, and the modernisation projects (legacy system replacement, plant connectivity, AI on the shop floor) are multi-year efforts that have barely started at most mid-sized firms.

Second, the software being built is moving closer to the business. The next wave of software will not be generic platforms. It will be custom-fit systems built around one company’s workflows, machines, and data. That work cannot be done from a product roadmap in a software company. It has to be done inside, or right next to, the operating business.

Third, AI raises the value of domain context rather than lowering it. When code generation gets cheap, the scarce skill becomes knowing what to build: which approval flow actually matters on the shop floor, which sensor data is trustworthy, how the ERP maps to physical inventory. That knowledge lives in industrial companies, not in San Francisco.

What this means if you run an SME

If you are a manufacturer or distributor, the talent window is open. Developers who would not have answered your calls in 2021 are answering now, and you can hire them without paying Silicon Valley rates. Hire for IT fundamentals plus curiosity about your operations, not for factory pedigree.

If you are a developer, treat “boring” industrial employers as a feature. The work is concrete, the systems matter, and the demand curve points up for years.
